We currently highlight only text matching the strict syntax for URLs.
So, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leberk%C3%A4se (the real URL) would be
highlighted properly.
Relaxing the match for full Unicode support will impact performance and may
bring some interesting false matches. However, I do feel we should look into
making the highlighting more human-friendly, if we have time.
