Just FYI, there's an old library called libgnomecanvas that draws
things into client-side buffers with the libart library. That's been
"part of" GNOME for a while (I think) but it's widely regarded as
something to be moved away from.

More recently, there are libraries like goocanvas that draw using
cairo, (and therefore can draw into client-side buffers or into X
drawables with the X Render extension or into win32 windows or PDF,
PS, SVG files, etc.).

There's been talk of adopting a canvas into GTK+ itself, (goocanvas is
certainly a contender for that), but no firm decision has been made on
that front yet.
